On a sunny day in September, the Strawberry Creek Restoration Program (SCRP) hosted their first volunteer day for fall. The event took place at the UC Berkeley College of Environmental Design (CED) garden, a garden designed by Kylie Schmidt, a graduate student in the College of Environmental Design. The CED garden is located between the Campanile Tower and the Faculty Glade. At the start of the semester it was overtaken by invasive grasses, burrs, Italian thistle, and Himalayan blackberry, but thanks to volunteers and a couple hours of weeding, one can now see the thriving California native shrubs, such as sticky monkeyflower, pink flowering currant, and snowberry, and groundcovers such as woodland violets. The CED garden is a great example of a student-led initiative to bring more native habitats to campus, and the SCRP team welcomes anyone on campus to come enjoy the garden and join us in upkeep efforts!
