Although summer in Berkeley means many students have gone back to their hometowns, restoration and upkeep of Strawberry Creek is still in session!
In June, we had happy campers from Kids for the Bay learn all about Strawberry Creek’s history and everything that goes into maintaining this Berkeley landmark! With such a large group of children, the camp was split into two groups for the day.
One half learned about Berkeley native plants that reside along the creek banks as well as the invasive plants that needed to be removed. Julia Lambert, an EH&S Strawberry Creek Restoration Program (SCRP) intern, guided the children on hands-on restoration projects as they cleaned up and weeded out the invasive plants growing along the North Fork of Strawberry Creek by the Eucalyptus Grove and the Eucalyptus Crib Wall.
The second group learned about the insects and fish that thrive in the creek and tried to identify species living in the creek. They took part in a catch and release activity for water striders and all types of insects after a lesson taught by EH&S Environmental Specialist Sharon Harichandran.
EH&S enjoys teaching kids about the importance of creek and habitat restoration and environmentalist work as it sparks an interest in keeping a movement such as the SCRP going.
